Hand Made Custom Electric Guitars and Basses

I will make a genuinely hand-built custom guitar to your specification.

I do not use CNC machines, 3D printers, engravers etc.

I  use routers, saws, rasps files and sandpaper and elbow grease!

We will spend time discussing your requirements: music you play, solid or semi-hollow body, choice of wood, colour, finish, neck shape/thickness, fret wire, hardware, pickup choice, string gauge, purpose of the guitar; gigging etc.

Price will depend on the type of design, woods and hardware you specify.

I do not currently make acoustic guitars.

Electric Guitar and Bass Setup

Why have your guitar or bass set up professionally?

Experienced musicians know how they like their guitar to be set up ensuring it is comfortable to play and sounds at it’s best.

If you are learning to play it is vital to have a guitar that is set up to the peak of it’s playability, making it easier to play, it will sound better, it will be in tune up and down the fretboard and give you an all-round better experience. You do not need to have an expensive guitar to benefit from a good set up.

If your guitar has lost its mojo it’s probably time for a setup!

Nut Replacement

The nut can become worn through constant tuning but can also become brittle and crack depending on the material. Nuts can be replaced with new ones pre-made from various materials from hard plastics to composites and bone.
Please note, the guitar will need a basic setup after the nut is replaced, this is at a discounted rate.
Alternatively, I can make you a custom nut from bone to the exact dimensions of your guitar and specification.

  • Replacing a pre-made nut - £20 + £20 for basic setup = £40 plus cost of nut.

  • Custom made bone nut - £50 + £20 for basic setup = £70 plus cost of nut blank.

Fretwork and Refrets

Perfectly level, clean, polished frets are imperative to the way your guitar feels, plays and sustains. Bends and slides feel effortless with good fretwork. Fret buzz and notes choking (not sustaining) will make your playing sound horrendous!
If you play often you will notice divots begin to appear in the areas you play the most. Sweat and oils will start to make the frets look tarnished and more effort will be required to bend the string. Generally, frets will need levelling and/or crowning and polishing. If this has already been done a few times the frets may have become too low for maintenance and may need replacing. I am more than happy to assess and will tell you honestly whether they can be levelled and crowned or if the instrument requires a refret.

Level, crown and polish, dress fret-ends (including fretboard clean and oil/ lacquered fretboard clean) - £40 to £60 depending on condition of frets. £80-£100 for stainless steel frets (stainless steel takes longer to install and wears tools quicker).
     •    Complete refret – Unbound non-lacquered fretboard - £150 plus cost of fret               wire.
     •    Bound non-lacquered fret board - £180 plus cost of fret wire. £240 if you        have  nibs.
     •    Add £20 for lacquered fretboards.
     •    For stainless steel fret wire £200 for unbound and £230 for a bound fretboard, £290 with nibs, plus cost of fret wire. Includes level, crown and polish, dressing fret ends,  cleaning and oiling fret board/ lacquered fretboard clean.
     •    Fretboard and frets clean and polish only - £25 + strings if required
